Every year, in America, there is a foetal abduction. A woman at full term is forcibly taken and her baby violently removed by another woman in order to gain a child of her own.
Barren looks at the psychology behind such a brutal act and the motivation for it. The 'villain' of the story, Julia is a complex woman. Unable to conceive and desperate for her own baby to love she will try anything she can, but when IVF fails and money runs out she is left with no options other than to accept she will never carry her own child. A woman of faith she begins to lose hope, to feel abandoned, she begs God for a sign that she is still loved by him, that he is still there for her - enter Emily.
Emily, a career driven single mum to be, resigned to motherhood, crashes her car outside Julia's place of work as security in a deserted paper mill. This is Julia's sign. Her desperation, her intense hope combined with depression and need, create a world inside Julia's head. This baby is hers, she is utterly convinced, this is the sign that she prayed for and she must be the one to deliver the baby, "her baby", by whatever means she must use.
The arrival of the local police add fuel to her fire, her need intensifying, she knows she must act fast before she gets found out and loses her final hope. Desperation leads to carnage and our 'villian' must do the most brutal act but from a place of extreme love and desire to nurture.
